Hardware accelerator gives mobile owners new set of tools

Accelerators and incubators are now launching plenty of new software startups into the tech world, but fewer programs in Silicon Valley target companies looking to build cool new pieces of hardware. HAXLR8R, an accelerator specifically designed for hardware startups, debuted its first class of nine projects on Monday, demonstrating the range of possibilities that exist for consumers when they have a piece of hardware linked to software on a mobile device. The startups had 15 weeks in China to build a prototype of their device.

Mango Is a Fresh New Flavor for Windows Phones

When Microsoft’s latest mobile operating system debuted, it stood apart visually from other mobile OSes. Windows Phone 7 eschewed the desktop-like interfaces seen on iOS and Android. Network provider Three launches £5 per day Euro Internet Pass

Smartphone retailer turn network provider Three has launched a new Euro Internet Pass, allowing pay-monthly customers to browse the web at will for just £5 per day whilst on their travels.

Scrapping the shockingly high and unwanted roaming bills that currently follow any trip abroad, Three’s new Euro Internet Pass will see users able to trawl the web, check emails and post all their holiday snaps to Facebook whilst on the move, all for a fixed daily price.

Whilst the offer is not being extended to PAYG customers, the £5 per day opt-in internet usage option, which is available now ahead of the summer holiday period, could potentially save contracted monthly users a considerable sum when on their hols.

Microsoft releases My Xbox Live for Android devices

HTC announces its first dual-SIM smartphone - the HTC Desire V

HTC has announced its first dual-SIM smartphone (GSM + GSM), the HTC Desire V. The device was announced in Ukraine for a July release, but is expected to hit Indian shores in the near future.

The HTC Desire V runs on Google’s latest operating system Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich straight out of the box. In terms of specifications under the hood, the device has a Qualcomm 1GHz Cortex-A5 processor, Adreno 200 graphics, 512 MB RAM, a 4-inch display with a resolution of 480x800 and a 5MP rear snapper but no front facing camera. For all the audio buffs, the device comes with Beats Audio (something that has become a standard with HTC smartphones). The Desire V has 4GB internal storage expandable via a microSD card slot. It also has Bluetooth 4.0. The device measures 118.5mm x 62.3mm x 9.3mm and weighs 114gms making it a run of the mill Android device.

Idea introduces ID 918 dual-SIM Android smartphone for Rs. 5,994

Competition in the budget smartphone segment continues to heat up, as Idea Cellular launches its dual-SIM Android touch phone – ID 918. The device is already available at online retailers such as Flipkart with a price tag of Rs. 5,994.

Speaking of specifications, the Idea ID 918 runs on Android 2.3 operating system. It comes with a 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen with 480 x 800 pixels resolution, 3.2 MP primary camera and a 1,300 mAh battery, which is rated to deliver 4 hours of talktime and 200 hours of standby time. The device has 150MB built-in storage and supports up to 32GB microSD card. The device comes loaded with a 2GB card. For connectivity, the Idea ID 918 smartphone supports 3G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Apple going for changeable iPhone lens?

A US patent application made public on Thursday hinted that Apple may be toying with the idea of letting picture-loving iPhone users change lenses for the smartphone cameras. 

Apple's application for a "back panel for a portable electronic device with different camera lens options" included a diagram reminiscent of an opened iPhone with labeled parts. 

The application described a design to let users change lenses that typically are fixed in the backs of smartphones to act as eyes for cameras. 

Focus Squarely On Europe, Mobile Payments Startup iZettle Gets $31.4M From Greylock, MasterCard & More

Just days after releasing an API to integrate its payment platform into third-party apps, iZettle, known as the “Square of Europe” for its dongle-based iOS mobile payment system, has even more news: it has just completed a  €25 million ($31.4 million) Series B round of funding as part of its bid to become the biggest mobile payments platform in the region. The round was led by new investors Greylock Partners and Northzone, with participation from other new backers, including the payment giant MasterCard and SEB Private Equity, and previous investors Index Ventures and Creandum.

The funding takes the total investment in the company to $46.7 million, and Jacob de Geer, iZettle’s co-founder and CEO, says it will be used for product development, and to continue to build out its mobile payments service in Europe — currently available in Scandinavia and trialling in the UK. “Our priority is to get the UK fully launched, and then look at other major markets like Spain, Italy, France and Germany to continue building up our transaction volume,” he told TechCrunch in an interview. “We’re not interested in the U.S. They’re doing really well with Square and others.”

Nokia Launches 41 MP PureView 808 Smartphone

Nokia India today launched its much awaited 41 MP camera smartphone – the Nokia PureView 808 - at an event held in the capital. With this, Nokia has become the world's first manufacturer to launch the highest resolution camera smartphone. The company intends to cement its position in the market with the launch of this latest product.


The smartphone features high-resolution 41 MP sensor with Nokia PureView imaging technology and high-performance Carl Zeiss optics and runs the Symbian belle operating system. Apart from this, the smartphone sports a 10.2 cm (4-inch) AMOLED multi-touch capacitive display with Corning Gorilla Glass and is powered by a 1.3GHz processor. It comes with an internal 16GB memory expandable up to 48GB with a microSD card. The smartphone is also accompanied with a Nokia Tripod Mount HH – 23 for better capturing of images.
