Two-way data binding in Windows 8

Last week we looked at the INotifyPropertyChanged and INotifyCollectionChanged interfaces and the ObservableCollection object, which are important parts of data binding in the XAML model. This week we will find out how two-way data binding works. Two-way data binding will allow your UI to make changes to the data without having to know the specifics of the data.

I started by creating a simple object to hold my data (an integer and a string property). There is nothing fancy here, just two properties. This object was a bit more complex than you might think; I added a third read-only property that constructed its value from the other two properties to neatly format them into output. I also implemented INotifyPropertyChanged. I fired off a PropertyChangedEventHandler for the int and string properties when their set accessor was called. In addition, I fired the event for the formatted value property each time either of the other two were called. The code is in Code sample A.

Say hello to Dell’s Windows 8 tablet

The fine folks over at NeoWin managed to secure a slide detailing the specifications for Dells’ forthcoming Windows 8 tablet. Of course, Dell may issue several other models, but this appears to be, at a minimum, one of them.

The tablet is an Intel-based device, with a 10.1″ screen. Internal hard drive space will be provided by an SSD that will hold up to 128 gigabytes. The machine will pack 2 gigabytes of RAM. The rest of the specs are below, on the slide itself:

On the same day that Microsoft announced its new iPad competitive Surface for Windows RT tablet, Apple began airing a new advertisement for the iPad. The ad focuses on the Retina display, displaying tasks that may be enhanced with the higher-resolution screen and is entitled ‘Do It All’.

Among the activities shown are sending an email, reading a Newsstand magazine, watching music videos, editing a slide show in Keynote, publishing an iPhoto Journal, painting digitally and reading an iBook. Apple’s iMovie and iBooks textbooks are also featured prominently.

Microsoft announces new 10.6″ Microsoft Surface tablets, running Windows 8 in RT and ‘Pro’ flavors

Microsoft held an event today at Milk Studios in Hollywood CA, where it announced its new line of Microsoft Surface tablets, which it calls a ‘whole new family of computing devices’. There will be a Surface for Windows RT and one that runs Windows 8 Pro.

The entry-level Surface is a tablet which is 9.3mm thick, features a full-size USB 2 port, 1366 x 768 display, beveled edges canted at 22 degrees and weighs 1.5 lbs. The casing is made of magnesium and Microsoft calls Surface, a ‘full PC’. This makes it 0.1mm thinner than an iPad and 0.06 lbs heavier.

The tablet features a Gorilla Glass screen, and a kickstand. It was also shown off with a magnetic cover that appeared to be very similar to the Apple Smart Cover for iPad, but it features a full multitouch keyboard on the inner side.
