Facebook, with its more than 845 million active users is the top social network in 126 countries, according to the June 2012 edition of “World Map of Social Networks,” which lists the popular social networking sites by country, based on Alexa & Google Trends for websites traffic data.
According to the recent map, Facebook has established its leadership position in 126 out of 137 countries analyzed. Europe is the largest continent on Facebook, with 232 million users, followed by North America with 222 million users, and Asia with 219 million users.
Looking beyond Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn seem to be battling for the second position.
In India, Facebook takes the first position, followed by Linkedin and Orkut. It’s surprising, but Google’s almost dead social network Orkut is very much alive in India, and is even ahead of the addictive micro-blogging site Twitter.
Meanwhile in nations like Russia and China, local social networking sites take over the top two positions.
In Russia, social networking site Odnoklassniki takes the first spot, followed by V Kontakte and then Facebook.
In China, QZone si leading with 560 million users, followed by Tencent Weibo (337 million), and Sina Weibo (334 million).
World Map of Social Networks does not include statistics for Google’s new social network Google+, since Google+ is not displayed by Google Trends for Websites.
