Digital music service Spotify launches free radio on mobile devices

Digital music service Spotify launches free radio on mobile devices
Digital music-subscription company Spotify is launching a free radio service for mobile devices in the U.S, according to a latest report from the Associated Press. The service is available only on iOS devices right now.
Spotify started offering the radio service on computers in December and discovered that people wanted to use it on their mobile too.
“We found those that use radio are really some of the most highly engaged users of Spotify. They stay longer and are more likely to upgrade ,” said Charlie Hellman, Spotify’s vice president of product.
Using the free service, users can listen to genres of music similar to the artist, album, song or playlist they’ve created within Spotify. They will also be able to give songs a “thumbs up” for playback on computers later on.
Spotify has introduced audio ads in the radio service, and people can sign up for paid subscription of $9.99 a month, if they don’t want to see ads and get to choose songs. Spotify’s “launch sponsors” include a number of its existing advertisers, such as Chevrolet, Heineken, McDonald’s and Verizon Wireless.
Spotify operates in 15 countries, and has about 3 million paying subscribers globally. Spotify’s radio service puts it into direct competition with other Internet radio services such as Pandora, Slacker and Songza.
