Intelligent Storage Systems are RAID
arrays that are:
•Highly optimized for I/O processing
•Have large amounts of cache for improving
I/O performance
•Have operating environments that provide:
–Intelligence
for managing cache
–Array
resource allocation
–Connectivity
for heterogeneous hosts
Benefits
of an Intelligent Storage System
Intelligent storage system provides
several benefits over a collection of disks in an array (JBOD) or even a RAID
arrays:
–Increased
capacity
–Improved
performance
–Easier
data management
–Improved
data availability and protection
–Enhanced
Business Continuity support
–Improved
security and access control
Components
of an Intelligent Storage System
Front End :The front end provides the interface between the storage system and the host.
it consists of two components:
1.front-end ports
2.front-end controllers
cache: cache is an important component that enhances the I/O performance in an intelligent storage system.cache is semiconductor memory where data is places temporarily to reduce the required to service I/O request from the host.
Back End: The back end provide an interface between cache and physical disks.it consists of two components:
1.back-end ports
2.back-end controllers
the back end controls data transfer between cache and physical disks
the algorithms implemented on back-end controllers provide error detection and correction, along with RAID functionality.
Physical Disks: A physical disk stores data persistently.Disks are connected to the back-end with either SCSI or a Fiber channel interface.
An intelligent storage system enables the use of a mixture of SCSI or Fiber Channel drives and IDE/ATA drives.
